Dion Hulse: How to become a (WordPress) Surgeon

Dion Hulse, a core contributor to WordPress, is giving a workshop on Sunday on contributing to WordPress titled “How to become a Surgeon – An introduction into WordPress core contributing”.

“When was the last time you could look at a vanilla WordPress install and say “I made that work!” – believe me when I say, It’s a great feeling to know that tens of millions of people are affected by one single bit of functionality in WordPress. If that’s something which you would like to be able to say, this is possibly the workshop for you.

During this workshop you’ll learn the process of how WordPress development works. The workshop will start at the beginning (an idea or a bug) and work our way through the steps and processes that a bug or feature goes through to its début in a WordPress release.”

Alex Farrar: The Law of Twitter

Alex Farrar is going to be giving a presentation at WordCamp Melbourne on how to not get sued for writing something on your blog. Alex is a media/entertainment lawyer with expertise in the ways emerging technology is driving changes in the laws of defamation and privacy.

She is a Senior Associate at Shiff & Company, one of relatively few law firms in Melbourne that has a genuine media and entertainment law practice. Prior to joining Shiff and Co this year, she was a Corporate Lawyer for the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, where she was responsible for – amongst other things – establishing a partnership with YouTube and getting ACTF-related content on iTunes.

She is currently completing a Masters in commercial law, focussing particularly on digital intellectual property and the ways in which “bricks and mortar” laws have adapted to in response to developments in internet-based communication.

Her presentation will be called “The Law of Twitter” and will be an introduction to the law of defamation and privacy, particularly as it applies to blogs and twitter. She will look specifically at what happened to Catherine Deveny, (along with a few other gossipy Melbourne examples) and talk about what steps can be taken to protect bloggers and tweeters from being fired from their “day jobs” or sued.

John Ford: Security: The Great WordPress Lockdown

I am pleased to announce that John Ford from Automattic will be presenting on Security: The Great WordPress Lockdown.

There are bad people in the world. Some kick puppies, others steal candy from babies. But I think we can all agree the worst offenders are those that try to exploit WordPress sites. Together we’ll explore the twisted minds of these sick individuals and the tricks they use to get into our sites. Using real code examples, our discussion will cover how sites get exploited, which will naturally lead us to a discussion on fixing exploited sites, and then – obviously – what should be done to prevent attacks in the first place. With just a few good tricks of our own, and a bottle of aspirin, we can all prevent a potentially massive headache.

About John

Kiwis say “Kia Ora bro,” Aussies say “G’day mate,” but where John Ford is from they just say “Hey y’all.” Regardless of your salutational preferences, no one can dispute John’s passion for avocados, good beer, his iPad, and writing beautiful code. John presently works for Automattic, focusing his attention on VaultPress – a realtime backup service for WordPress.org users. Looking to rub elbows with John while you’re here? You might catch him down at the pub for a few pots, but more likely he’ll be holed up in some corner responding to VaultPress inquiries!

If you’re interested in seeing what John has to say, then please register for WordCamp Melbourne. We’d love to see you there!

Keynote: Drupal vs. WordPress

We have confirmed our Keynote presentation for WordCamp Melbourne! Ryan Cross will give a presentation on WordPress vs. Drupal.

Ryan is a technology consultant with over 15 years’ experience, who has been working on the web for more than 12 years. His experience ranges from technology for small businesses, to web sites for large enterprises and commercial developments. He has become adept at meeting a variety of requirements with different technology platforms. Ryan heads CrossFunctional, a company specialising in Drupal, WordPress and other open source technologies. He is a strong advocate of open source communities and has participated in multiple projects over the last 10 years.

We all come across the questions; “Is Drupal too complicated? Is WordPress just for blogs? Which platform is best for my project?”. Ryan will present a critical overview of WordPress and Drupal which compares and contrasts the two very popular projects. Each community has recently released new versions, borrowing and learning from the other. The common stereotypes of each project are now outdated and frequently don’t apply. Controversy is sure to abound, but hopefully having another tool in your belt will ensure that not every project is approached with the same hammer.

If you’re interested in seeing what Ryan has to say, then please register for WordCamp Melbourne. We’d love to see you there!
